College of Social Sciences Travel Awards News and Updates

There have been a few changes in the College of Social Sciences travel awards program, formally known as the College Travel Funds for Professional Development in Research, for 2009-2010. This year $36,000 has been allocated for travel awards, based on the recommendation of the CSS Research Council.

A major change in the criteria for reviewing applications concerns faculty rank. Junior faculty (assistant and associate faculty) are no longer given first priority for funding, although they will be given a slightly higher priority than senior faculty. In addition to faculty rank, other factors considered by the review committee are: purpose of travel, traveling for more than one purpose, significance of conference, prior travel support from CSS and UH, productivity, and the chair's recommendation.

Another change by the 2009-2010 review committee is that a curriculum vitae be submitted with the application. Since this requirement is not stated on the application form, those who do not attach one will be sent an e-mail and asked to do so.

This year there are five review cycles (and five submission deadlines). Three of these have already passed, but applications can still be submitted for the May 14 and August 6 deadlines.
